The Wilson Lightning Surge Protector

Using a roof mounted antenna creates one vulnerability for a repeater system: lightning. Fortunately, Wilson has designed a Lightning Surge Protector (Part#: 859902). This component uses a replaceable gas discharge element (fuse), and includes an outlet for a 14 gauge earth ground.

Installation

The surge protector should be placed inline, after the donor antenna. The surge protector / lightning arrestor is intended to primarily protect them amplifier. This means it should be installed between the donor antenna and before the pre-amplifier and primary amplifier. (see graphic below). This will protect all components, such as splitters, attenuators, taps, etc. downstream of the protector.

Installing the Ground:
• Use Green 14 Gauge solid core wire
• Use a solid copper grounding rod or bond the wire to the the structure which is attached to the electrical system and eventually the grounding rod.
• Traditionally, is the standard symbol used to indicate an earth ground to electricians and contractors.

A properly executed earth ground. Notice the yellow/green jacketed cable, indicating a ground.
